Roughly 10% of the population claims to be suffering from neck pain at any given time

Similar to the back, the neck is also a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, joints, and tissue. It is therefore not uncommon for problems to arise in the area of the neck that can cause anywhere from mild to severe pain. Furthermore, the large amount of muscles, joints, and ligaments in the neck means that there can be many different causes triggering neck pain.

Perhaps the most obvious and typical cause of neck pain is a muscle strain or sprain, which can be a result of anything from overuse to injury

The neck becomes strained when muscles are irritated or inflamed, and can often occur after sleeping in the wrong position, using poor posture, and/or moving the neck in rapid or awkward ways. Muscle strains are also common due to whiplash and sports-related injuries. When drivers experience whiplash, the neck is subjected to a great deal of unnatural backward and forward movements, which can tear and rupture soft tissue in the neck. Similarly, many sports require abrupt movements, collisions, or falls that have great potential to strain neck muscles. That said, causes of neck pain are not limited to muscle strains alone.

While muscle strains are the most common causes of neck pain, chronic neck pain may be the result of more serious underlying causes

Causes of chronic neck pain include, but are not limited to, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated discs. Arthritis, or the breakdown of cartilage, can cause pain by way of the bones in the neck rubbing against each other. Similar to arthritis, both degenerative disc disease and herniated discs involve the malfunction of discs in the spine, which can induce severe and lasting pain.

Symptoms of neck pain vary considerably and can be influenced by other factors such as age and lifestyle. More often than not, neck pain tends to manifest as a dull or aching pain. Dull pains in the neck are most likely the product of a muscle strain, and fortunately do not require serious medical attention. However, more severe symptoms of neck pain can be indicative of significantly greater health problems. For example, neck pain that is accompanied by headaches is a common symptom of occipital neuralgia. Occipital neuralgia is a condition in which one of the occipital nerves (located in the neck), is pinched and in turn sends a radiating pain up the sides of the head and scalp. Similarly, neck pain that is experienced along with pain in the shoulders and arms could be a symptom of cervical radiculopathy. Cervical radiculopathy occurs when cervical nerves in the neck become inflamed, which then induces pain or numbness down the nerve’s pathway into the shoulder and arm.
