Natural Therapeutics for Injuries

As a former athlete, I’ve had my fair share of sports injuries like sprains, strains, and breaks. It’s often taken me from doctor’s office to doctor’s office from OTC medications to more serious prescription medication. However, like many people, I found that I needed alternative natural therapeutics that were natural and non-habit forming.

Sports Injuries can range from sore muscles, aches and pains to more serious conditions like breaks, strains, and chronic pain. Generally, if you’ve had an injury as a result of recreational athleticism, your doctor will first prescribe the RICE method. The RICE method an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. But often we’ll find this isn’t enough on its own and so look for healing beyond this method.

A lot of misinformation and unsubstantiated claims exist which make it difficult to know which natural therapeutics truly work for sports injuries. Fortunately, I’ve detailed them in this article in the hopes that you can find which treatment will work for you.

Locating The Source

When we experience joint pain and muscle soreness. sometimes it can be difficult to self-diagnose the source. Without knowing the source or cause of the pain it can be hard to treat. Oftentimes it can become chronic pain. It is recommended to reach out to your physician or trusted medical professional to help find the source or cause.

Start By Taking Care Of Your Body

The best way to take care of your body is to try to avoid sports injuries in the first place. We can do this in a myriad of ways. Getting enough physical activity, as well as varying that physical activity can help keep your joint flexible and muscles strong.

Our diets effect us and can help cause pain and muscle injuries. The way we eat can affect the amount of inflammation we have in our bodies. A high-fiber diet that’s rich in healthy fats is known to decrease inflammation and pain.  A recent study found that people who eat a high-fiber diet have less osteoarthritis pain. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that can be extremely painful.

Taking care of our joints pre and post-activity is also an important step in avoiding injury and mitigating pain. Stretching before your workout is important. You can also warm up your muscles through heat pads and hot compresses and activate your muscles. Using topical pain creams on your joints and muscles for injuries and post-workouts can temporarily help reduce pain. It is the inflammation which is the cause of this pain.

Chronic Pain has also been linked to having an unhealthy sleep schedule. Professional athletes that perform at a high level, need to sleep anywhere from 7-9 hours a night. Keeping a consistent schedule, meaning going to sleep and waking up around the same time each day, is critical.

Using The Right Natural Therapeutics

There are many natural ways to reduce joint pain or pain caused by a sports injury without prescription medication. It is best to use them in combination with other natural therapeutics. Everything in our body is connected, so it’s always best to try multiple tactics at the same time.

Massage for Sports Injuries

Tight muscles are the leading cause for pain. Getting a regular or semi-regular therapeutic massage can help keep your muscles loose while increasing your blood flow. Massage encourages oxygen and nutrient flow to the surrounding tissue.

Acupuncture for Sports Injuries

Treatments using acupuncture have shown to help with sports injuries. Using acupuncture treatments affects the chemicals in the brain and can help modulate the pain we feel. It’s believed that it assists in increasing blood flow to the injured area of our body as well as help to drain the excess waste we store in our damaged tissues. Without draining or releasing the tissues after an injury the area can become atrophied and weaker than its counterparts.

Natural Therapeutics and Remedies

Natural therapeutics and remedies have a long been thought of as “old wives’ tales”. From personal experience, I can assure you this is not the case. I’ve tried nearly every natural pain remedy that’s on the market, and while I had varying levels of success, I finally found something that works. Elixicure is a natural pain relief ointment that you apply to the skin, it creates a similar effect to icing but lasts longer as the coolness comes from organic menthol rather than ice that melts.

Elixicure gave me instant pain relief caused from my sports injury and I never built up a tolerance to it. Our bodies build a tolerance to oral medications quickly and over time they can become ineffective. If you’re someone with chronic pain caused by repetitive movements, oral medicines can worsen pain by tightening our muscles and putting us at risk for further injury. When this happened to me, I increased my dosage, and then increased my dosage again, until I realized that my pain wasn’t being addressed and in fact, I was seeing other harmful effects on my stomach, liver, and even kidneys.

What I Do Now

Before every workout I use a hot compress on the joints and muscles, paying particular attention to the areas where I feel chronic pain. I do easy stretches every morning to ensure that I don’t pull something on the way to the gym (we’ve all been there). Once there I increase my stretching and try to use circular motions to further stretch and loosen my joints. Post-workout I ice my problem areas and use natural topicals like Elixicure to help with any continued pain. I’m never going to be 100% pain-free, especially because I have no intention of ever giving up my sport. But with the use of a variety of natural therapeutics, my injuries are manageable and no longer intensifying.
